Meaning when upright
The Nine of Wands shows a man with a bandaged head leaning on his staff and glancing warily to one side, with eight more staves standing behind him like a fence. He has already been through battles and expects another, but he is still on his feet. The card speaks of resilience, persistence, and the grit to hold out a little longer when the end is close; Waite calls it strength in opposition, a person who will meet an onslaught boldly and may prove a formidable antagonist. Waite also notes delay, suspension, and adjournment, a reminder that the final resolution may take longer than hoped.
