Meaning when upright

The Three of Pentacles shows a stonemason on his bench in a church, turning to confer with two onlookers, a figure in a dark monkish robe and a hooded figure in a patterned cloak, who have brought the drawn plans. It is a picture of expertise and vision coming together, where each person's contribution matters: the builder's skill, the planner's design, the sponsor's support. This is the stage at which competence earns notice and feedback improves the work. Waite gives it "métier, trade, skilled labour" and also "renown, glory," the reputation that grows from work well done.

A sculptor at his work in a monastery. Compare the design which illustrates the Eight of Pentacles. The apprentice or amateur therein has received his reward and is now at work in earnest.

Divinatory meaning: Métier, trade, skilled labour; usually, however, regarded as a card of nobility, aristocracy, renown, glory.
Reversed: Mediocrity, in work and otherwise, puerility, pettiness, weakness.
Additional meaning: If for a man, celebrity for his eldest son. Reversed: Depends on neighbouring cards.
