Meaning when upright
The Seven of Cups presents a dazzling array of options, but they hover in clouds, and not all of them are real. A dark figure faces cups holding a face, a veiled and glowing figure, a serpent, a castle, jewels, a laurel wreath, and a dragon, which are commonly read as love, mystery, temptation, security, wealth, victory, and fear. Waite calls them strange chalices of vision belonging to the fantastic spirit, and notes that nothing permanent or substantial is suggested. The card warns against wishful thinking and scattering energy across fantasies. Its Golden Dawn title, Lord of Illusionary Success, underlines the gap between the dream and what can be made real.
