Meaning when upright
The Five of Cups brings the disruption of five into the heart: something has been lost, spilled, or broken, and grief is the natural response. The black-cloaked figure bows over three fallen cups, so absorbed in sorrow that he has not yet turned to the two cups still standing behind him. Waite sums it up precisely as a card of loss, but something remains over. It can describe a breakup, a disappointment, or an inheritance or outcome that does not match expectations. Mourning is necessary, but the card also points to what can still be saved.
